Connecting with nature, friends and colleagues

Updated: May 18, 2021

Looking towards the summer months, after a difficult winter, many will be looking forward to reconnecting with nature, loved ones, peers and colleagues. Lets take a look at the Green Spaces we have on campus, here, at Northumbria University and how they can contribute to guest and delegate well-being.

Ellison Garden:

Perfect for any social occasion, Ellison Garden is located behind the Great Hall in Sutherland Building. With a discreet passage way out the back of the building past a living wall, guests and delegates will discover this secret garden, offering a moment of tranquillity from the busy city centre.

Well kept lawns and plenty of space offer the privacy and distance needed for delegates and guests to socialise safely. Picnic benches and shady trees create the perfect space to have meetings, team building exercises and social gathering in the fresh air. Alternatively, for delegates wanting a peaceful and reflective space, the Ellison allotment and surrounding birds, bees and butterflies can boost well-being and, in turn, engagement with attendees.

Northumberland Garden:

Located right in the centre of City Campus, delegates can grab their lunch from the Quad and in seconds be enjoying it in the afternoon sun - and there's plenty of delicious and healthy choices nearby.

With a range of benches and tables, this gives delegates the choice to sit together and network safely or opt for a moment of stillness and reflect on the days events. The surrounding hedgerows and planters, not only promote happiness through biophilia but are a promising source of biodiversity for the campus.

Northumberland Road:

With trees, outdoor seating and the hustle and bustle of Newcastle's High Street just seconds away, this space offers delegates a pedestrianised road to stretch their legs and enjoy the buzz of University life!

Along Northumberland Road, delegates can admire the Gothic architecture of Sutherland Building and the Great Hall or explore Ellison Quad with it's seasonal flowers and Nico Wilderberg's 'Five Figures' Sculpture. The Green Space around Fred Wilson's 'Bookstack' has also been noted as a hot spot for pollinators in our latest biodiversity audit.

"Greenspace... including green walls and incidental vegetation, are increasingly being recognised as an important asset for supporting health and well-being." Public Health England

Covid-19 and the lockdowns experienced in the UK has created a new understanding for well-being and enjoying time spent with people we haven't seen for so long. This, in turn, presents a need for safe, green spaces at UK tourism destinations for delegates and guests to enjoy with loved ones, family, friends, peers and colleagues.

We are currently taking booking for 2022/2023, so if you're interested in booking one of our spaces for your next event, contact us today!
